Aiden has something to say....

Hi Annie!

Seems Aiden has an issue with being barefoot in long grass. I immediately thought of Miss Annie when he started doing this. So funny!

Remembering...

Thinking of my sister today- it would have been her 33rd birthday. I often wonder what kind of aunt she would have been. I know Aiden would have loved her and I can't wait to tell him all about his aunt Kathi. I am happy knowing she is at peace, no longer fighting the anorexia that she battled all but 10 years of her life. Happy birthday, Kathi!

This time last year was such a rough day. It had just been announced the MOU would not be renewed on September 1st. I was a basket case, not knowing if I would have a referral in time. I was then given the devastating news that one of my students took his own life. I have been able to keep in touch with his mom and am honored to be on the board of directors for John's Hope, a children's mental illness foundation.

Today I am in such a different place than I was last year. Today I celebrate the lives of Kathi and John and hope I can share many wonderful memories of these special people with Aiden.

Are They Twins?

Seriously- you be the judge...

From the back, I'd say no. From the front...

Uhhh, no again. Seriously, Erica and I were asked that question several times today. I just said no, they're friends. What I wanted to say, actually sing: their cousins, identical cousins... Or, even better, yes they are, but they were born 2 days apart and have different fathers. Okay, they both look/are Asian, so I guess I should cut people a break. And I have to say, Erica and I both agree their voices sound eerily similar. So what are Aiden Bao and Duc? Definitely friends for life!

Hey look- coordinating outfits and they still don't look like twins! Aiden and I ventured down south to spend the day with Erica and The Spudster. Poor spud wasn't feeling well, but we still had a great time. I think I finally found some table food Aiden likes- Chinese. Should have known. The boy needs some lo mein noodles and a little spice in his diet. He even signed more for the first time (and he did it again at dinner so I know it wasn't a fluke)!

I took so many pictures today. I haven't edited any yet, but wanted to share a few of my favorites (I am going to save some for another post- or two). Erica also took some pictures of Aiden and me. We decided we need to get together once a month so we will have pictures of us with our sons. And hopefully some of the identical cousins together.

We had lots of fun at the park, even though both boys were getting tired.

Check out Erica's blog for even more great pictures of a fantastic day. I am so thankful to have Erica and Duc in our lives. Erica and I are pretty similar in our parenting styles and we have the forever bond of going through our adoptions at the same time. And even though they are not twins :), Duc and Aiden share a birth country and a culture that Erica and I both feel strongly about maintaining and incorporating into the boys lives. I just wish we lived a wee bit closer together!

**Eighty**

Actually, I think it got up to 81 at one point. Loved it! We went to the park tonight after dinner with our friends Dana and Stephanie. It was a bit windy, but we had a great time. Dana was my rock during the adoption- we work together, live in the same neighborhood and Miss Stephanie (who Aiden adores) was adopted from Russia.

Just let me get my shoe and I'll be right over
Okay, I'm ready to play

Now this is my style of basketball

Ah, even better!

Snack break- grass: it does a body goodTaking a break on the playground
Have a wonderful weekend!

The Best Medicine

It's been a rough week at work. That's all I can say right here but I am d.o.n.e with the drama, people talking out of both sides of their mouths, you know, typical high school behavior- too bad it's not the students. I can honestly say I would be a stress filled mess right now if I didn't have my boy. It's amazing how all the stress melts away as soon as I hold him in the afternoons. It comes back in the morning but my late afternoons and evenings are the best. I am so ready for summer break. Until then, Aiden is the best medicine I could ask for. Last night as I was putting him to bed, he had the hiccups. I always sing "You are my sunshine" before bed. His hiccups came at the end of each verse. It got me laughing so hard I was crying. Then he was laughing and hiccuping in between the laughs. It was music to my ears. I think this video proves it. His laugh always makes me laugh. I can't say it enough- I love this boy!

When Life Gives you Lemons...

Or should that be, when your son poops in a stacking cup, you win an award? Who knew my son's elimination techniques could help me win an award. I am sure there are other reasons, right, Elaine? Errr...oh yes, the whole adoption aspect of this blog. As Elaine said, anyone who goes through the adoption process deserves the Lemonade award. There are lots of lemons that seem to come around with adoption. I am honored Elaine nominated me! Thank you!

Here are the rules:

1. Put the logo on your blog or post.
2. Nominate at least 10 blogs that show attitude and/or gratitude.
3. Be sure to link to your nominees within your post.
4. Let them know they have received this award by commenting on a post.
5. Nominate your favorites and link to this blog.

Many of the people I am going to nominate have given me the lemonade that got me through the adoption process. Some of these same people had difficult journeys but still showed attitude and gratitude in their posts. So, without further ado, here are my nominations in no particular order (if I had more time, I could have done many more):

1. Melissa at Journey For Two: Many of you know Melissa and her husband James had a very rough adoption road. They had to make a decision none of us could ever fathom having to make. I am so thrilled that they are expecting a little bundle of joy this fall!

2. Kate at Green Grass Grows: Another adoption blog, another long and winding road. But lots of attitude and gratitude along the way. I just know this will be the year Miss Luci finds her baby sister!

3. Julie and Love From Vietnam: Talk about a long adoption road. Julie faced many obstacles in getting Claire home, but she never stopped showing gratitude and an admirable attitude! I was so blessed to meet Julie and Claire in Vietnam. I hope we are able to get together again...someday.

4. Audi at Great is They Faithfulness: I happen to be friends/coworker with Audi IRL. She is an amazing woman and has faced many challenges over the past year, helping her mom recover from a stroke. I love her outlook on life and the gratitude she shows on a daily basis, on and off the blog. Audi definitely deserves this award!

5. Erica at Motherhood: Almost Full Disclosure: Erica is a blogger who I am lucky enough to live close to and call a friend. Now we have boys who have birthdays 2 days apart! Erica was dealt many lemons during the process but she always remained positive and tried to help me do the same. She shows so much gratitude. I have the same feelings, Erica just says it better!

6. Susan at From God's Arm's....: Susan has been a great supporter and a blogger full of attitude. And since I won this award in part because of Aiden's talents, I thought Petunia should earn part of this nomination. Ah, our dear, sweet Petunia. Such a sweet and spicy girl. Petunia has enough attitude for the entire blogging world. This post shows the spicy side and this post is one of many that made me laugh out loud! I get to meet this sweet girl soon and I couldn't be more excited about it!

7. Ashlea at Project Stormea: I "met" Ashlea through our Vietnam agency. Sadly Vietnam didn't work out for her family. There were many other lemons along the way, but Stormea-the sweetest glass of lemonade ever- was definitely worth the wait. Go check out their little glo worm. Such a cutie!

8. Sharon at Vietmom Chronicles...: Attitude? Check. Gratitude? Check. Helping others find lemonade during their uncertain adoptions (including me)? Not a check mark big enough for this amazing lady!

9. Jessica at Bringing Home Baby B: Another blogging friend I met through my Vietnam agency. Sadly another adoption that didn't work out in Vietnam but did in China. Jessica never stopped showing gratitude. I can't wait to see her new little one in her arms!

10. Daphne at Apollo's Gal: Another amazing single mom who faced many twists and turns on the long road to Ethiopia. Even with her own stress, she gave me support during my tough times. Just look at pictures of Daphne with Ben and you will know how grateful she is!

A little tax refund fun

Gotta love refund time, especially with the adoption tax credit! Almost all of my money went back into the bank to build up my savings account and a new account for Aiden. BUT, I just had to buy a new 50 mm/1.4 lens. I picked it up Saturday afternoon. So far I love it, but I can't wait to get outside and use it in some natural light (go away rain). It seems a lot faster than my other lens and so far I am loving the quality of the pictures, especially the closeups (no time for editing yet).

Sam was ready and willing when I said I wanted to try out my new lens

Sweet Lucy, Aiden playin' some tunes, fireman Max and a growing up too fast Grace

So hard to get a group shot (Max told me in advance he wouldn't be smiling)....
Runaway babies

And then there were two...Aiden had a little photo shoot for his birthday invitations. I won't show the chosen pics but here are a few that didn't make the cut (do you see a theme emerging?). And this last one cracks me up. It was the third outfut and Aiden was d-o-n-e. He didn't care what his outfit said!
I was recently nominated for a blog award (thanks, Elaine!). I promise I am working on getting out my acceptance post and my nominations. You can't rush a good acceptance speech....

Eleven

How can it be? My baby is growing up way too fast. I can't believe Aiden is 11 months old today and we have been a family for 4 1/2 months. Apparently Aiden didn't know that he was supposed to sleep 11 hours last night like he has done the past 4 nights. I think we was just ready to celebrate his countdown to the big 0-1 and give a birthday shout out to a fellow Ca Mauer- Happy 2nd Birthday, sweet Lulu!

The last month has been all about mobility. Aiden is cruising everywhere and can stand on his own for at least 30 seconds at a time. He has taken one step forward, but no real walking just yet. Pretty impressive seeing that he couldn't put any weight on his legs when I first met him on November 30th. And do you think I can catch this feat on camera? Of course not. But I did get a good shot of Aiden's squat. When he falls he usually doesn't sit down all the way for several seconds. Just practicing his Vietnamese squat I suppose! He will take steps when holding my hand. He gets more steady everyday. Aiden has moved up to the next level in Gym*boree. He is now the youngest in his class but he is trying very hard to keep up with all of the walkers in the class! This is how he walks with his push toy....forget walking upright. Aiden does everything HIS way!Aiden got his 5th tooth this month. Thankfully, I think the other eye teeth are giving him a break for now. Unless that is why he was up so early this morning...yikes!

He has been extra clingy in the past week or two. I don't know if it's the age, an attachment thing, or a combination of both. I wouldn't say he is experiencing stranger anxiety, but he definitely wants mama and mama only when others are around. He doesn't let others hold him. Don't get me wrong, Aiden loves a crowd. He just does his networking from Mama's arms now! Last night we went to a school dinner for students graduating from our job coach program. He thought every single person in the room was there for him. Once he got comfortable, he tried to make the rounds, crawling to each table to coo at everyone there. He will also make his coo/ahh noise to get the attention of people wherever we go. It always works!

His favorite toys seem to be anything that isn't a toy and anything he shouldn't have. The cat's food and water are favorites as are mama's laptop, camera and all associated cords.
Aiden loves to be outside. Mainly he loves to eat grass and leaves. Today he couldn't figure out why rocks weren't as edible.

As for actual food, Aiden is still eating mainly baby food. He does eat some finger foods. Cheese, crackers, cheese, yogurt melts, cheese, puffs...did I mention cheese? It's his all time favorite! I have tried scrambled eggs, waffles, french fries, diced fruits, steamed vegetables and pasta. He gums it for a little bit and then spits it back out. He won't even eat any of the 3rd food dinners yet. I guess he will when he is ready.

And while I am not ready for Aiden to be one next month, I think he is. He is always ready for a new adventure. That is just one of the million things I love about my boy!
